Stepping into an Addict’s Shoes: Community Workshops

step into an addict's shoes at our community worskshops

When you hear the word “addict,” what do you think? Many of us picture a disheveled man pushing his shopping cart up and down the sidewalks of rundown neighborhoods. Or maybe you imagine a woman with bloodshot eyes and needle marks running up her arm, whose kids are in foster care because she can’t stay out of prison.

Addiction seems so far removed from most of our lives, that we may feel like it could never happen to us.

But when was the last time you were late to work because you had to stop off for your morning coffee? Or you stayed up all night watching episode after episode even though you knew you had to get up early the next morning?

The truth is, many of us have the characteristics of an addict within us, to an extent. This gives us the ability to identify with addicts in our lives and help intervene.

Identifying with the pain

Retorno’s prevention programs offer unique interactive workshops that encourage open discussion and help you identify the pain that exists within an addict, and learn how to handle it differently.

We’ll show you an array of tools and treatments that we use in Retorno so you can step into their shoes and really feel what they are feeling. Through our workshops, you will identify with their struggles and their internal maelstrom that makes them reach for this “solution.”

You will begin to understand what happens when a person tries to hide from his pain, and how to deal with pain differently. You’ll experience for yourself the power of sharing and asking for help; the power of facing challenges, openness, and honesty.

Our workshops will expose you to a new dialogue, and you will gain practical tools to help the addicts in your life.

Interactive workshops for the community

Retorno does not just treat addiction. We address the community as a whole and engage in prevention and outreach, with about 30,000 visitors per year: students and teachers, soldiers and officers, professionals and staff, and parents.

The seminars at Retorno provide an in-depth understanding and practical tools for working with teenagers and adults struggling with addiction. We cover a variety of topics including prevention, treatment, diagnosis, and identification.

Participants come away with an awareness of what addiction is and why people use as well as tools to listen without judging.
