Young adults– failure to launch

Failure to launch can make you feel like the whole world is moving along without you.

Is your young adult child struggling to hold down a job? Has your child dropped out of college because he just can’t make it? Does he seem content to keep living at home, without making any moves to become self-sufficient?

Failure to launch syndrome affects many young adults who struggle to transition from adolescence to adulthood. Failure-to-launch children seem to lack the motivation, skills, and tools needed to function independently. After failing to succeed in college, many failure-to-launch children end up back at home, lacking a meaningful direction in life. They may feel discouraged, out-of-sync with their peers, and at odds with their families who expect their child to thrive outside the nest. A lowered sense of self-worth and lack of purpose can result in depression, social anxiety, and substance abuse.

Failure to launch can be caused by a variety of factors. Learning problems, helicopter parents who do not let their child function independently, insufficient support networks, and mental illness can all contribute to the problem. Click here to read more about causes and treatment.

Oftentimes, failure to launch can be the cause or result of other psychological, behavioral, and emotional issues. If you have a failure-to-launch child, it is important to find out if a deeper, more damaging problem is occurring as well.

Substance abuse or just failure to launch?

While an adult child living at home could simply be struggling to learn independence and self-sufficiency, there could also be another underlying issue such as substance abuse. If you suspect your young adult child is experimenting with drugs, it is crucial address the problem.
